Timeline of the School

I. Significant Institutional Landmarks

1926

  • UM classes begin on Oct. 18 in the Anastasia Building (architect unknown) located at the northeast corner of University and Riviera Drives in Coral Gables, Fl. (UM Bulletin Vol. 2 #1, 1 July 1927)

1927

  • UM Department of Architecture is listed with others in the College of Liberal Arts (UM Bulletin Vol. 2 #1, 1 July 1927)

1928

  • B.S. Architecture degree program announced (“Architecture Course Organized” The University News, Coral Gables, Fl: University of Miami, Vol. 1, #20 15 Mar. 1928)

1931

  • Five students graduate with degrees in Architecture (B. Arch) in UM’s fifth annual commencement at the Miami Biltmore Club

1932

  • Architecture program closes, falling victim to the growing economic depression and on July 14 students are advised to change to another department or school (Tebeau, Charlton W. The University of Miami: A Golden Anniversary History, Coral Gables, Fl)

1947

  • School of Engineering established (60 Years of Achievement 1926-1986, Office of Public Affairs)

1950

  • The Department of Architectural Engineering is formed within the School of Engineering

1951

  • First B.S.A.E. degree granted (Engineering Goals Report)

1959

  • The Architectural Engineering Department moves with the school from the original Anastasia Bldg. to the J. Neville McArthur Engineering Bldg. (Architect, Wahl. J. Snyder, AIA & Assoc) on the current campus.

1961

  • Department of Architectural Engineering is renamed Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering (1961-62 UM Catalogue mentions only Arch Eng, 1962-63 shows five year curriculum in Architecture)

1963

  • First five year UM B. Arch degrees granted (1994 SOA NAAB Arch. Program Report)

1972

  • School of Engineering name is changed to the School of Engineering and Environmental Design

1973

  • Master of Urban and Regional Planning Degree is establish (“State of the School” report, Feb. 1974)

1974

  • Five year B. Arch Program accredited by the National Architectural Accreditation Board
  • Architecture Dept. hosts National Student AIA Chapters convention at the unrestored Biltmore Hotel

1975

  • First Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning Degree awarded

1978

  • Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering renamed Department of Architecture and Planning
  • B.S. in Architectural Engineering is relocated to the Dept. of Civil Engineering
  • The School of Engineering and Environmental Design is renamed the School of Engineering and Architecture

1979

  • The Master of Architecture (Non-Professional) and Master of Architecture in Research Degree Programs are initiated

1983

  • The Department of Architecture and Planning is granted independent school status and moves to Buildings 48, 49 (designed in 1945 as student housing by Marion L. Manley, FAIA in association with Robert Law Weed and renovated for the SOA by Jan Hochstim, AIA) and part of Eaton Hall (60 Years of Achievement 1926-1986, and “University of Miami Moves back to Boom-Bought Campus and into First Unit of All-Modern Educational Plant,” Architectural Forum 89:1, Jul 1948)

1984

  • Annual Commencement Program lists first graduates from the “School of Architecture”

1986

  • SOA commissions Aldo Rossi to design a series of buildings which incorporate the existing buildings and creates an “Academic Village” (Catalogue for Rice University Exhibit “Aldo Rossi, Three Projects in America, 1990 Text: Drexel Turner)
  • SOA Alumni Association sponsors first Reference Library Benefit (SOA News, Fall ’87)
  • John Ames Steffian Scholarship was established for third or fourth year architecture students who demonstrate academic merit and excellence in design.

1987

  • SOA “Model Shop” opens (SOA News, Winter 1987)
  • B.S. in Land Development and Planning Program initiated

1988

  • The Master of Architecture in Suburb and Town design is initiated

1989

  • Preston Award was established for second year architecture students who demonstrate academic merit and excellence in design.

1990

  • The Ferguson, Glasgow, Schuster Award was established for an African-American architecture student who demonstrates academic merit and excellence in design.
  • Colin MacDonald Betsch Memorial Award was established for a fourth year architectural student who demonstrates academic merit and excellence in design.

1991

  • M. Arch in Computing in Design initiated
  • B. Arch Spring Semester in Rome Program initiated
  • SOA publishes first volume of The New City 1992

1992

  • SOA participates in post Hurricane Andrew Charrettes and focuses all studios on issues of rebuilding (The New South Dade Planning Charrette: From Adversity to Opportunity, Gen. Editors: L. Alvarez, J. Hernandez, C. Leff, D. Williams)
  • Center for Urban and Community Design initiated (CUCD) (Profile: “University of Miami School of Architecture,” Kathleen Randall, Traditional Building, Mar/Apr. 2004)
  • The James Branch Scholarship was established for a senior architecture student who demonstrates academic merit and excellence in design.

1994

  • SOA Paul Buisson Reference Library integrated into the UM Library System as a branch library (SOA News, Autumn 1994)

1996

  • Monacelli Press publishes Between Two Towers, The Drawings of the School of Miami, by Vincent Scully
  • M. Arch I (Professional) Degree Program announced (SOA Newsletter, Spring 1996)
  • SOA Exhibition University of Miami: An Architectural History mounted (SOA Newsletter, Fall 96 – Spring 97)
  • Lidia Abello Scholarship for Design excellence established. (SOA Newsletter, Fall 96 – Spring 97)
  • Charles Barrett Book Fund established (SOA Newsletter, Fall 96 ¡VSpring 97)
  • The Lidia Abello Memorial Scholarship was established for second year architecture students who demonstrate academic merit and financial need.

1999

  • The McLamore Memorial Scholarship was established for a graduate student who demonstrates academic merit and an interest in landscape design.

2001

  • SOA sponsors exhibition and catalogue Building Through Time, The Making of a School of Architecture, 1926 – 2001 which reviews the history of the school and exhibits received alumni work (catalogue editors: F. Martinez and C. Penabad)
  • Knight Program in Community Building established (SOA Newsletter, Winter 01)

2002

  • School initiates New Urbanism Archive as an international repository of historical information about the New Urbanism

2003

  • Groundbreaking ceremonies are held for the Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center (architects: Leon Krier; Merrill and Pastor Architects: Ferguson Glasgow Shuster Soto, Inc.)

2004

  • Spring – construction begins on Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center

2005

  • Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center dedicated at opening reception October 18
  • School of Architecture participates in University’s Momentum fundraising campaign
  • Barry Q. Boggio Endowed Scholarship for students in need is funded

2006

  • School receives a 2006 Charter Award of Honorable Mention from the Congress for the New Urbanism for hurricane relief housing design
  • School receives a collection of historic plaster casts from the Metropolitan Museum in New York entitled “A Legacy of Dukes and Sultans from the 12th to the 16th Centuries.” An exhibition of the collection was held October 16 through November 22 and the casts are now being used in the School’s drawing studio.
  • Professors Carie Penabad and Javier Cenicacelaya publish book Monterrey: Redefining the Urban Center documenting the work of one of the School’s studios

2007

  • Congress for the New Urbanism Florida Chapter awards the School the John Nolen Medal for Contributions to Urbanism in Florida
  • Center for Urban and Community Design hosts a symposium on green building “Under the Sun: Sustainable Innovations and Traditions” in the new Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center
