Open City Studio

Beijing

May 14 – August 5, 2012
Summer Session
3-6 Credits
Professors Adib Cure and Teofilo Victoria

This course is primarily intended for architecture graduate and undergraduate students. This year’s studio and seminar will take place in the city of Beijing and will travel to Tibet, Shanghai, Seoul, Kyoto and Tokyo to retrace the influence of Chinese classical architecture. The studio will concentrate on the subjects of classical composition, construction and traditional urbanism and how these considerations are articulated in domestic architecture. The documentation of building types and models, both urban and rural, timber frame and brick vernacular methods of construction, and the participation of the garden, the temple and the fortress in the conception of the city will be reconsidered from the point of view of the house, in particular the Siheyuan and its urban context, the Hutong, and consequently, constitute the critical resource for an architectural project and for a further definition of a proposal for the construction of the city today.
