This course is open to students from all majors from UM and other universities. There is no prerequisite course; drafting is not required. Academic activities include lectures, seminars, and visits to buildings and public spaces.
The itinerary follows the tradition of the Grand Tour of the XIX century, when northern Europeans traveled to Italy and Greece to learn about the cultures of antiquity. Class instruction is given on site, focusing on the cities, their architecture and history. The first part of the course (3 cr.) travels to Paris, Venice, Florence, Rome and Madrid; the second part (3 cr.) to Madrid, Athens and the Greek Islands.
As an introduction to a cross section of history, the itinerary includes in Paris sites such as the Champs Elysees, Place Vendome, the Opera and the Eiffel Tower; in Venice the Grand Canal and St. Mark’s Square; in Florence the Duomo and the Piazza della Signorica; in Madrid the Escorial; in Athens the Acropolis, the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike.
