High School Summer

The School of Architecture offers two different summer programs for high school students; one is residential, the other is daily. Our programs provide an important testing ground both for students considering professional education and architecture students considering a career in teaching. Typically held for three weeks, faculty and advanced architecture students offer courses of study designed to give high school students an introduction to the profession as well as to the university experience. Students have access to the school’s facilities including design studios, lecture rooms, library and computer lab including basic slide collection and videotape equipment to discuss, present and record work. Founded more than a decade ago, many of the programs’ earliest graduates have already made their way into professional careers.

Explorations in Architecture and Design is a three-week residential summer program which offers students the opportunity to build familiarity with design processes and the role of architects and designers in society. Students live in residential colleges and can enjoy use of the University’s facilities. The intensive course couples the design studio experience with lectures by distinguished faculty and guest professionals. Weekend trips to significant landmarks of architectural and urban design in South Florida such as Vizcaya Palace and Gardens and Key West further enhance the curriculum.

Summer Studies in Architecture for High School Students is a three-week daily program that introduces students to the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design. In its 21st summer, the program engages students in the design process, which is one of creative problem solving. The program enhances a student’s environmental awareness, intellectual development and career determination. Fundamentally, students are exposed to three design professions, describing the opportunities in each area and expanding his or her awareness of career possibilities.
