Summer Studies for High School Students

Program Overview:
This program introduces secondary students (9th through 12th grades) to the field of environmental design through projects offered in architecture, landscape architecture, and planning. In its 22nd summer, the program serves to engage students in the design process which is one of creative problem solving.
The program consists of three consecutive one-week sessions, meeting 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, from Monday June 11 to Friday June 29. The course will be taught by the program director and faculty specialists. The curriculum is organized by subject:
Monday and Tuesday sessions will focus on information described in lectures, slides, readings, and field trips. Wednesday and Thursday meetings will consist of studio sessions in which students work on the assigned design problem. Each Friday there will be reviews of student work with faculty and visiting professionals.
Objectives:
The program enhances the abilities of students in three major areas:
- Environmental Awareness: Demonstration of the interrelated effects of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning helps the student identify and understand the complex process of building, whether a house or a city. Students will then understand how they can positively affect the environment at both individual and civic scales.
- Intellectual Development: The program offers the experience of college-level design problems, thereby developing intellectual skills in areas currently beyond the secondary school curriculum.
- Career Determination: The program exposes the student to three design professions, describing the opportunities in each area and expanding student awareness of career possibilities.
The facilities of the School of Architecture include design studios, lecture rooms, and a computer lab including basic slide collection and video tape equipment to discuss, present, and record work.
Administration:
Program tuition $750 including the cost of materials (which students will keep).
The University of Miami does not grant any college credit for this course. Students may want to explore other credit options with high school guidance counselors. A certificate will be awarded to each student at the conclusion of the program.
