New Book on the Shelf - “Thinking, Acting, Writing”

Joachim Perez, School of Architecture part-time faculty, won an NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Board) grant for $10,000 for his proposal “Writing in Architecture as a Professional Endeavor,” started a writing course for seven SOA students, who in turn produced a book which demonstrates communicating effectively with the written word.

The Book is titled THINKING (GLOBALLY), ACTING (LOCALLY), WRITING (ABOUT ARCHITECTURE AS A PROFESSIONAL ENDEAVOR) and features the work of seven students from the School of Architecture.

SOA Historian publishes new book on the Victorian perception of Renaissance architecture

Assistant Professor Katherine Wheeler released her book Victorian Perceptions of Renaissance Architecture (Studies in Art Historiography) in April. The book traces the gradual acceptance of Renaissance architecture through the writings of John Ruskin, John Addington Symonds, Walter Pater, William J. Anderson, Reginald Blomfield, and Geoffrey Scott, among other architects and critics, focusing on the intersection of architectural history, practice, and education.

Faculty partners and artists publish two more volumes to ‘R & R Studios Incomplete Works’

Partners in the firm of R & R Studios, Associate Professor in Practice Roberto Behar and Adjunct Faculty Rosario Marquardt are known worldwide for their museum and public art installations including the gigantic red “M” in Downtown Miami. That was the first volume in their series R & R Studios Incomplete Works. They now have added a second and third volume including The Living Room and Museum Works.

Professor and Dean Emeritus Nicholas N. Patricios Publishes Book on Sacred Architecture of Byzantium

Professor Patricios new hardcover book The Sacred Architecture of Byzantium: Art, Liturgy and Symbolism in Early Christian Churches will be released for sale in February 2014. The author offers a comprehensive survey from the age of Constantine to the fall of Constantinople. His identification of seven distinct Byzantine church types, based on a close analysis of 370 church building plans, will have considerable appeal to Byzantinists, lay and scholarly.

School of Architecture Publishes “On The Waterfront: Miami’s Fifteen Mile Promenade”

The On The Waterfront: Miami’s Fifteen Mile Promenade publication grew out of that school-wide study of the Miami waterfront conducted in 2008 and represents the collective efforts and support of many people and organizations. The pages are a sequel to a public viewing at the Miami Dade College Freedom Tower that fall; an additional project taken on by School of Architecture faculty members Jacob Brillhart and Victor Santana, with the support of the Florida Inland Navigational District and the Florida Department of Transportation.
