Just Published – Miami Modern Metropolis
October 1st, 2009 — Sponsored by the Bass Museum of Art and edited by assistant professor Allan T. Shulman, Miami Modern Metropolis: Paradise and Paradox in Midcentury Architecture and Planning includes more than 40 essays by 23 contributors (including UMSOA faculty Ceo, Lejeune, Millas, Penabad and Shulman as well as numerous alumni), richly illustrated with master plans, original renderings and archival photographs. Framed by theoretical essays that establish Miami’s modernism as a terrain of paradox, the book investigates the built and unbuilt work of the city, spanning visionary urban plans, iconic infrastructure, commercial and industrial projects, resort architecture and the elaboration of regional identity in new residential paradigms like the tropical home. The book will be distributed in Spring 2010 by Balcony Press and is currently available at Books & Books and the Bass Museum gift shop.
