Design/Build Studio Receives Major Donations To Move Forward with Popular Program

February 17th, 2012 — The School is proud to announce the receipt of two major gifts to provide funding for our Design/Build Program, which provides students with the opportunity to design and actually construct their designs. The gifts were donated by Coastal Construction Group and First Florida Building Corporation. Principals Tom P. and Tom C. Murphy (UM MBA ’01) presented the Coastal Construction Group gift to build a covered, open-air structure for the Design/Build work. The students may design the shed and Coastal has offered to assist the students in its construction. Coastal Construction has been a long-time supporter of the School of Architecture dating back to 1995.

The gift from First Florida Building Corporation was presented by First Florida’s president, W. Robert Miller, who graduated from the College of Engineering in ’77 with a degree in Architectural Engineering. The generous donation is given in memory of his father Billy E. Miller and will fund the Billy E. Miller Design/ Build Professor. Filling this position will be Jim Adamson, a founding member of the famous Jersey Devil architecture design/build collaborative, who has worked with the students on previous Design/Build projects. In addition to First Florida’s current gift, Bob Miller has provided support to the Design/Build program for studio expenses.

The Design/Build program through its recent years has been under the direction of Professor Rocco Ceo, director of undergraduate studies.
