Perez Architecture Center Becomes Venue for Frost Concert
November 14th, 2011 — On Monday, November 28 at 7:30 p.m., the first strains of live music will be heard in the School of Architecture’s Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center Stanley and Jewell Glasgow Lecture Hall. Thanks to the University’s Frost School of Music, an audience of students, faculty, guests and the public will be treated at no charge to Franz Schubert’s Song Cycle Die Schone Mullerin (The Beautiful Miller-Maid).

School Focuses on Developing Architecture Curriculum in Orlando
October 24th, 2011 — The School continues to work with members of the Orlando community to establish a professional architecture curriculum in the Orlando area. Current plans are to begin the program in January 2012. Dean Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk delivered a lecture “Designing for the Future” in Orlando on October 18th as part of the Orlando AIA October Architecture Month.

HUD Grant to Research Benefits of Neighborhood Walkability
October 3rd, 2011 — In September, the Department of Epidemiology at the Medical School with faculty of the School of Architecture received a HUD grant for $500M to conduct research on the health of Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries in relation to where they reside. “Health Impacts of the Built-Environment among Miami Medicare/Medicaid Beneficiaries” is one of six projects supported by HUD’s Sustainable Communities Research Grant Program.

SoA and the CUCD Produce Spanish Editions of Urban Design Publications
September 30th, 2011 — “Spanish Editions of Urban Design Publications” was a publication initiative (2002-2010) of the University of Miami School of Architecture faculty and the Center for Urban and Community Design (CUCD) members Sonia Cháo, Andres Duany and Gustavo Sanchez-Hugalde. Together, they researched the urban design and historic preservation of Ibero-American cities, including those in the Caribbean Basin. During this endeavor, it became evident that urban designers and scholars in those regions did not have access to seminal books on urban design in their native language. The J.M. Kaplan Fund generously funded the translation, editing and printing of five seminal books on urban design. All books are being donated to universities, students and professional associations in the Caribbean Basin and Latin America.

September 30th, 2011 — Four Visiting Critics have joined the faculty this fall, Sara Elizabeth Caples, AIA – Principal, Caples Jefferson Architects, New York, New York; Rene Gonzalez, AIA – Principal, Rene Gonzalez Architect, Inc., Miami, Florida; Alexander Gorlin*, FAIA – Principal, Alexander Gorlin Architects, New York, New York; and Sebastian Velez, LEED AP – Senior Design Director, Oppenheim Architecture + Design, Miami, Florida.
