University of Miami School of Architecture

Community

The School of Architecture believes in the educational and humanitarian value of supporting programs that benefit the local, national and international community. Two programs, the Center for Urban and Community Design and the Knight Program in Community Building, exist side by side to provide opportunities for student learning and community improvement.

Graduate students and upper level undergraduates participate in charrettes and community meetings involving citizens’ groups, public agency representatives, lawyers, developers, sociologists, educators and private citizens

The Center for Urban and Community Design fosters a collaborative interdisciplinary approach that supports the people, places and processes essential for creating and sustaining family oriented and environmentally responsible communities as near as West Coconut Grove and as far as Mexico.

Community Building Program, formerly Knight Program in Community Building was made possible through grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The CBP advances the knowledge and practice of effective community building through an innovative series of interdisciplinary initiatives including mid-career fellowships, scholarships, conferences, charrettes, and publications. The program has helped organize conferences, workshops and events on community building and livable community design in the U.S. and Europe, and community charrettes in several cities including San Jose, CA, Macon, GA, Memphis, TN, Duluth, MN, Coatesville, PA, Lexington,KY and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Visit the Community Building Program Website to find out more about the former fellows, charrettes, events, publications and research.
